O'Toole Highlights 42 Individual Wrestling Champions

MADISON, Wis. – The 77th Annual  State Individual Tournament championship produced 42 champions at the Kohl Center Saturday evening, including the 18th wrestler to win four championships.

There were 14 former champions that added to their gold medal collection. Most notably, Keegan O’Toole of Arrowhead became just the 18th wrestler to win four State titles. He won the title in Division 1 at 160 pounds with a fall at 2:49 to give him a 47-0 record this year. Prior to this season, O’Toole won the 145 title last year, the 132 crown in 2018 and the 120 championhip in 2017.

Matty Bianchi of Two Rivers won his third championship by winning his bout at 138 in Division 2 with a 3-1 decision. He finishes his season with a 45-2 mark. Bianchi won the 132 championship last season and the 113 title in 2018.

The only match of the finals round featuring a pair of former champions was at 120 in Division 2. Blaine Brenner moved up after winning the 106 title last year to win his second title with a 7-4 decision over Tommy Larson of East Troy, who won the 113 championship last season and the 106 crown in 2018.

There were three past champions that added a second title in Division 1. Nicolar Rivera of Stoughton remained undefeated at 48-0 with a pin at 2:27 in his championship match. He won the 106 title in 2019. Da’jun Johnson of Whitefish Bay/Dominican/University School of Milwaukee received a forfeit because of injury to capture the 170-pound championship for the second consecutive season with a 37-0 record. Matt Meeuwsen of Bay Port won his second straight crown at 285 with a 5-2 decision in his title bout to up his record to 46-1 this year.

In addition to Brenner, wrestlers winning their second title in Division 2 are Clayton Whiting of Oconto Falls (48-1) with a 17-1 technical fall at 2:53 at 170, Reece Worachek of Luxemburg-Casco (48-1) with a 7-2 decision at 182, and Jake Rau of Medford (38-2), who won by fall at 5:38 at 285.

The five Division 3 champions to win their second championship include Tanner Gerber of Cameron (48-1) with an 11-8 decision at 113; Kole Marko of St. Croix Falls (36-1) with a 2-0 win at 145; Brady Spaeth of Cadott (46-0), who remained undefeated following a win by fall at 2:49; Trett Joles of Boyceville (46-1) with a fall at 3:51; and Trevor Dennee of Stratford (49-1) with a 9-4 decision at 195.

In addition to the multiple champions, there were eight first-time undefeated champions, including four in Division 1, one in DIvision 2 and four in Division 3.

In Division 1, Justin Groshek of Stevens Point  (46-0) won at 113, Mitchell Messenbrink of Arrowhead (12-0) won at 138, Kaden Reetz of Madison Memorial (43-0) was victorious at 152 and Marshall Kools of Neenah (44-0) won at 195. In Division 2, Tyler Hannah of Prairie du Chien (53-0) earned the title at 195. In Division 3, Gavin Drexler of Stratford (50-0) won at 126, Aidan Vandenbush of Random Lake (49-0) won at 146, Ethan Heil of Edgar (31-0) claimed the title at 220, and Tanner Gaffey of St. Croix Falls (46-0) won at 285.

Arrowhead has the distinction of winning the most titles in this year’s championships with three. Cadott, Kaukauna, Luxemburg-Casco, Prairie du Chien, St. Croix Falls, Stoughton and Stratford also had multiple individual champions with two.

The State Team Wrestling Tournament will be held Friday and Saturday, March 6-7 at the UW Field House in Madison.
