Holmen, Stoughton Advance to Div. 1 Team Wrestlng Final

For the first time in five seasons, there will be a new Division 1 wresting team champion.

Stoughton (23-1), which has finished runner-up the past three seasons, defeated four-time defending champion Kaukauna (21-2) 34-30 in the semifinals of the State Team Wrestling Tournament at the UW Field House in Madison Friday evening.

Stoughton will do battle with Holmen in the championship match Saturday evening. Stoughton advanced to the semifinals with a 47-13 victory over Marshfield in the quarterfinals earlier in the evening.

Gavin Miller and Braeden Whitehead recorded pins, and Tyler Dow and Hunter Lewis added technical falls to pace the individual scoring for the Vikings. The Galloping Ghosts were led by pins from Keaton Kluever, Jaden Verhagen and Cade Spilde, and a technical fall by Mason Campshure.

Holmen (20-0), also nicknamed the Vikings, edged Burlington (14-1) 27-26 in its semifinal match. Trailing by two points heading into the final bout of the match, Reed Williams won an 11-5 decision in his 160-pound match to give the Vikings the one-point victory.

Kalyn Jahn, Isaac Lahr and Tanner Schultz each led the Vikings with pins in their matches. The Demons won eight of the 14 bouts, including a fall from Jesse Fiers.

Holmen advanced to the semifinals with a 39-35 win over Arrowhead in the quarterfinals. In other quarterfinal action, Kaukauna downed Mukwonago 35-27, and Burlington rolled to a 49-13 win over Slinger.

The State Team Wrestling Tournament resumes Saturday at 10 a.m. with the semifinals in Divisions 2 and 3. The finals for all three divisions are scheduled for 3 p.m.
