Boys and Girls State Hockey Champions Crowned

MADISON, Wis. – Xavier Co-op took home the 2019 State Girls Hockey Tournament title in their first trip to State by defeating Hudson 6-5 in overtime at Veterans Memorial Coliseum Saturday.  

Mckayla Zilisch tied the game for the Stars with 12 seconds remaining in regulation on an assist from Annika Horman and Lauryn Hull to send the game into overtime. Maddy Jablonski scored the game winner at 2:32 into overtime to give the Stars their first State title.

Hudson's Hana Hellmers put the game's first goal in the net at 1:12 of the first period with an assist from Julia Wareham. Her teammate Nikki Olund gave the Raiders a 2-0 lead when she scored at the 6:16 mark with assists from Sydney Hendricks and Morgan Miller. Hudson took a three-goal advantage at 10:22 when Leah Parker scored an unassisted goal.  

Xavier got on the board at the 12:37 mark of the first period with a power play goal by Alaina Schauf with assists from Sarah Marvin and Mickayla Zilisch. Schauf scored again on the power-play goal at 15:34  with another assist from Zilisch.  

Zilisch tied the game at 3-3 with the first goal of the second period on an assist from Hanna Hiltunen) at 10:48. The Raiders regained a short-lived lead when Hellmers scored her second goal of the game at 15:32, but Tori Nelson retied the game with a goal assisted by Annika Horman at the 15:27 mark of the second period.  

Julia Wareham gave the Raiders a 5-4 lead at 12:02 into the third period with a goal assisted by Leah Parker, but Zilisch came through with the dramatic, game-tying score to send the game to overtime.

Xavier's Annaliese Mauel was credited with the win in goal. She made 14 saves, and Hattie Berndt, who started the game, made four stops.  Alayna Kunshier made 26 saves for the Raiders.

University School of Milwaukee won the State boys championship for the third time by defeating the Neenah Co-op 6-2.  

The only goal in the first period was scored the Wildcats' Tyler Herzberg with an assist from Jacob Como with 10:17 elapsed.

Herzberg scored an unassisted goal to give the Wildcats a 2-0 advantage at the 3:13 mark of the second period, and Blake Carey added to the lead at 14:25 on an assist from Herzberg. Carey increased the Wildcats' lead to 4-0 on a power play goal assisted by Casey Roepke and Robby Newton at 15:47. 

Neenah scored its first goal at 3:41 in the third period. Ethan Long found the net on an unassisted power-play goal. USM's Robby Newton and Sterling Cooke scored within 57 seconds of each other to give the Wildcats a 6-1 advantage. Newton's power-play goal at 10:02 was assisted by Roepke and Herzberg, and Cooke's at 10:59 was assisted by Alex Thurndercloud and Como) both score in the 11th minute.  

Neenah's Eric Alberts put in the final goal of the game on a power play with an assist from Long at the 13:24 mark of the fourth period 

Patrick Kelly made 11 saves for University School to get credit for the victory in goal, and Jake Mork made 38 stops for Neenah.
