State Softball Champions Celebrate Titles

The final day of the 2013 State Softball Tournament crowned four champions at Goodman Diamond in Madison, Wis. Saturday.

DIVISION 1

Westosha Central (23-1) won its first State softball title in convincing fashion with a 12-1 win over Kenosha Bradford (22-6) in the championship game.

The first seven Falcon batters of the game reached base and scored in a nine-run first inning.  The frame featured eight hits and five Red Devils’ errors. Falcon lead-off hitter Brittney Blazich had two hits and scored twice in the inning.

The Red Devils scored an unearned run in the fourth inning. Kori Gasso singled and scored when the throw to second on her stolen base attempt eluded the centerfielder covering second base. The Falcons’ added an unearned run in the fifth inning and two more runs in the sixth.

Westosha Central had 16 hits, including a game-high four by centerfielder Taylor Bergles, which ties for second-most in a State Tournament game. Blazich, Larkin Langston, Liz Fonk, Margaret McMullin and Hailey Jester each had two hits. Emily Hastings and Grasso each had a pair of hits for Kenosha Bradford.

Sarah Fonk recorded nine strikeouts and scattered six hits over seven inning to notch the win for the Falcons.

DIVISION 2

New London (17-5) shocked defending champion Baldwin-Woodville (21-4) to capture its first softball championship with a dramatic 2-1 come-from-behind win in the championship final.

Freshman Molly O’Connell ripped a game-winning double into the gap in right center to score a pair of runs with two outs in the bottom of the seventh inning. The last-inning comeback by the Bulldogs spoiled a sterling pitching performance by the Blackhawks’ Abby Klopp. Until the seventh inning, she only allowed three hits and only one runner to reach second base.

Baldwin-Woodville scored an unearned run in the top of the first inning on a Klopp sacrifice fly. Shelby Sommer allowed just three hits over seven innings without allowing an earned run for the Bulldogs.

O’Connell’s heroics were set-up by a two-out walk by Abby Elsholtz and a single to center by Kansas Walbruck, who stole second.

The Bulldogs’ Allana Beyer was the only player with  more than one hit in the game with a pair of singles.

DIVISION 3

Mineral Point (23-3) won its first State softball championship with a 7-2 win over Kenosha St. Joseph (24-2).

The Lancers plated a pair of runs in the first inning on an infield hit and a fielder’s choice. The Pointers got a run in their half of the first inning. Beth Wood tripled and pinch runner Lauren Graber later scored on an illegal pitch.

The Pointers took control of the game in the third inning by scoring four runs aided by a number of illegal pitches, two hits and a Lancers’ error. The big hit for the Pointers was a two-run single by Emily Wood. They added a single run in the fourth inning on another illegal pitch, and one more in the sixth on a hit batter with the bases loaded.

Beth Wood collected three hits for the Pointers and tossed a complete game to record the victory. Lindsay Thomas and Anna Spracklin had two hits to lead the Lancers’ offense.

DIVISION 4

Algoma erased a 2-0 deficit in the fifth inning with four runs and posted a 5-4 victory over Newman Catholic to win its first State softball title.

Baleigh Delorit and Meg Ryan hit back-to-back, two-run singles to ignite the fifth-inning  rally. The Wolves manufactured a needed insurance run in the sixth inning on a fielder’s choice.

The Fighting Cardinals narrowed the Wolves’ lead to 5-4 in their half of the sixth inning on Allison Brill’s third RBI of the game and a ground out by Brogan Resch.

Meg Ryan had three hits for the Wolves, and Tanika Jorgenson added a pair of singles to lead the offense.  Jordan Demmin was credited with the victory and Jorgenson got the save.
