State Track & Field Championships Conclude

The 2017 State Track & Field Championships concluded in La Crosse Saturday with the crowning of eight team champions and 117 event champions.

Kimberly won the Division 1 boys team championship with 41 points, one better than runner-up Oak Creek. Milwaukee King won the Division 1 girls title for the second straight season, scoring 58 points. Hamilton and Waukesha West were distant runners-up with 34 points apiece.

Xavier was the boys team champion in Division 2 with 44 points, and Rice Lake finished second with 37 points. Wittenberg-Birnamwood won the girls Division 2 crown with 40 points, six more than runner-up Catholic Memorial

Coleman was the boys champion in Division 3, compiling 43 points. Rosholt was second with 39 points. Algoma was the girls Division 3 team champion with 44 points, two ahead of Edgar’s 42. 

Chippewa Falls and Marquette tied for the boys wheelchair team championship with 36 points and Madison La Follette won the girls wheelchair title with 40 points.

There were numerous notable performances in the two-day event. 

Cami Davre of Whitefish Bay one of five girls in State history to win two events four times in a career. In addition to winning her fourth titles in the Division 800-meter and 1,600-meter runs, Davre ran to the championship in the 3,200 run. 

Faith Lubner of Reedsville won her fourth Division 3 title in 300 hurdles. She has also won three 100 hurdles titles.

Joe Schubert of Marquette also became a four-time champion, winning his fourth title in the wheelchair 100 dash. He also won the 400 and 800 races.

Tess Keyzers of Little Chute and Kyra Arendt of Bloomer won their third titles in their respective events. Keyzers won her third crown in the Division 2 shot put, while Arendt became a three-time champion in the Division triple jump. Both set meet records. Keyzer’s toss was 47-8 1/2, and Arendt jumped 40-8 1/4.

Brooke Jaworski of Wausau West set a Division 1 record to win her second straight title in the 400 dash with a time of 53.71. She also won the 200 dash for the second straight season. 

Cordell Tinch of Bay Port set the Division 1 record in the boys triple jump with a leap of 49-2 1/4. Tinch added a championship in the long jump. Caiden Haake of Alma/Pepin established a new record in the Division 3 discus with a throw of 181-0, and Noah Zastrow of Spencer set the record in the Division 3 pole vault at a height of 15-4.

Kenneth Bednarek of Rice Lake broke the Division 2 record in winning the 400 dash for the second year in a row with a time of 46.82. He also won his second straight gold medal in the 200 dash. Ben Dunkelberger of Lake Mills set a Division 2 record to win the triple jump at 47-0. He also won the championship in the long jump. 

The Edgerton 400 relay consisting of Marquerite Lawrence, Ashlyn Oren, Kathleen Reilly and Nikkia Johnson set the Division 2 record with a winning time of 48.69.

Audrey Kleiss-Garcia of Madison La Follette won an impressive four State titles in the meet, capturing the titles in the wheelchair 100, 400, 800 runs and the shot put. Makayla Jackson of Milwaukee King was a three-time champion in the meet, winning the 100 dash in Division 1 and as a member of the winning 400 and 800 relays. Nicole Mikula of Shell Lake also won three titles, claiming victory in the girls 100 and 200 dashes, and the long jump in Division 3. 

Ja’Cey Simmons of Milwaukee Lutheran repeated as champion in two events, winning the Division 2 100 and 200 dashes.
