State Boys Individual Tennis Preview

THE MEET:  The 96th Annual Wisconsin Interscholastic Athletic Association Boys State Individual Tennis Championships will be held Thursday through Saturday, May 31-June 2 at the Nielsen Tennis Stadium on the University of Wisconsin campus in Madison, Wis. Action will begin at 10:30 a.m. Thursday and resume at 9 a.m. Friday. Competition on Saturday begins at 8:30 a.m. Ticket prices are $6 per session.

9 a.m. Action through Quarterfinals

8:30 a.m. Consolation Semifinals
9 a.m. Championship Semifinals
10 a.m. Fifth-place Matches
11 a.m. Third-place Matches
11:30 a.m. Championship Matches

LAST YEAR:  Top-seeded Robert Krill of Brookfield East  won the Division 1 singles title by defeating second-seeded Colt Tegtmeier of  Madison Memorial 6-0, 4-6, 6-1 in the championship match. In Division 1 doubles play, the top-seeded tandem of John Massart and Ethan Budiono of Marquette defeated the second-seeded duo of Jack Steinberger and Eli Winter of Nicolet in the championship match 6-2, 6-1. Top-seeded Casey Johnson of Kohler won the Division 2 singles title for the second straight season by defeating second-seeded Juan Perez of The Prairie School 3-6, 7-5, 2-0. In Division 2 doubles play, top-seeded Jason Tan and Liam Matthews of Brookfield Academy captured the title with a 6-1, 6-1 victory over the second-seeded team of Andrew Diedrich and Mitchell Teuteberg of Catholic Memorial in the final. 

DIVISION 1 SINGLES OUTLOOK:  Junior Will Tennison of Verona earned the #1 seed with a 23-1 mark this season. He qualified as a freshman in 2016 and finished sixth, and he placed fourth last year. Senior Colt Tegtmeier of Madison Memorial received the #2 seed for the second straight season.  He enters tournament play with a 22-2 record after finishing runner-up last season. He claimed fifth place in 2016,  and  he qualified as a freshman in 2015, winning two matches before being eliminated from title contention. Junior Ryan Gold of Middleton is seeded third with a 17-4 mark. He has qualified the last two years to win his first-round match before being ousted from title contention. Junior Johnny Zakowski of Green Bay Southwest has compiled a 25-1 record this season, which earned him the fourth seed. He qualified his freshman season, and last year he won his first two matches before falling out of contention for the championship. Senior Neel Raut of Oshkosh West qualifies for the fourth straight season. He was given the fifth seed for the second year in a row. Raut possesses a 25-2 record this season. He qualified as a freshman in 2015 and won two matches in 2016 before placing third a year ago. Junior Jaden Aranda of Nicolet was issued the sixth seed with a 23-4 record this season. He placed sixth last year after qualifying in 2016 and winning a match before falling to his second-round opponent.

DIVISION 1 DOUBLES OUTLOOK:  The top seed was issued to seniors Evan Kubiak and Graham Werner of Neenah based on their 22-1 record. Senior Elijah Shimelpfennig and sophomore Josh Baldwin of Sun Prairie are the second seed with a 24-1 record this season. Elijah Shimelpfennig qualified the past two seasons with a different partner, advancing to the third round last year. Baldwin was an individual qualifier that did not advance beyond the first round a year ago. Seniord Noah Guillermo and Rob May of Marquette are the third-seeded doubles duo. Guillermo is a four-time doubles qualifier. After qualifying as a freshman, he finished fourth in 2016 and fifth last season with a different partner. May was a 2017 singles qualifier that advanced to the third round. He also qualified in doubles play in 2016 and won a first-round match. Senior Eli Winter and sophomore Ridley Aranda of Nicolet own a 21-5 record and were given the fourth seed. Winter finished runner-up last season and fifth in 2016 with a different partner, and Aranda finished sixth at State as a freshman last year with a different partner. Juniors Jake Stockhausen and Teddy Brodzinski of Marquette qualify as the fifth-ranked tandem. Brodzinski qualified with a different partner last season and fell in his first-round match, and Stockhauser teamed with May in 2016 to advance to the second round at State. The Nicolet duo of seniors Harry Rosmann and Sunil Sabnis is the sixth-seeded doubles team with a 23-2 record. Rosmann qualified with a different partner last year and advanced to the third round. 

DIVISION 2 SINGLES OUTLOOK:  The top seed is senior Casey Johnson of Kohler, who is the two-time defending champion. He is 23-0 this season to give him a  44-0 record over the past two seasons. As a freshman in 2015, he finished third. Sophomore Pablo Dale of Brookfield Academy is the second seed with a 17-1 record entering play in the tournament. As a freshman last year, he placed third as the third seed. Sophomore Daniel Taleghani of University School has compiled a 14-7 mark this season and has been issued the third seed. Senior George Wong of Dominican was issued the fourth seed with a 14-3 record. He placed fourth as the fifth seed last year. He also qualified in 2016 and advanced to the second round before being eliminated from title contention. Junior Sean Bochman of Altoona/Fall Creek is undefeated heading into the tournament at 18-0. He has been issued the fifth seed. Sophomore Johnny Horak of Xavier is the sixth seed with a 21-6 record. He qualified as a freshman a year ago and advanced to the second round before being eliminated from title contention. 

DIVISION 2 DOUBLES OUTLOOK:  Seniors David Horak and Konnor Barth of Xavier qualify for the second straight season. They are seeded first in the bracket with a 25-1 record after placing fifth a year ago. The Sauk Prairie duo of senior Parker Chrisler and sophomore Kelby Mack are also making their second consecutive appearance at State, possessing an undefeated 22-0 mark this season. Last season, they won their first-round match before dropping their match in the round two. Chrisler also participated in doubles at the 2016 State tournament with a different partner, which resulted in a loss in the first round. The brother combo of senior Liam Matthews and freshman Tayte Matthews of  Brookfield Academy are the third seed with a 19-2 tally. Liam won the State title last year with a different partner, and he was a singles qualifier in 2015 and 2016. Senior John McTernan and junior Nick Harron of Kenosha St. Joseph have qualified for the second year in a row. They are seeded fourth with a 21-2 record after advancing to the quarterfinals last season. McTernan also qualified in 2016 with a different partner, which resulted with a loss in their first-round match. Junior Matthew Cooper and sophomore Addison Elliot of University School is also making their second straight appearance in the State doubles competition. The fifth-seeded tandem possesses a 14-7 mark entering the tournament. They won a match last year before falling out of title contention with a loss in the second round. Senior Adam Kelly and sophomore John Ewing of Shorewood are the sixth seed with a 19-4 record. Kelly gained experience at State two years ago, qualifying with a different partner. They notched a win in their opening round match before bowing out of title contention in the second round.
