State Boys Golf Championships Preview

THE MEET: The 91st Annual Wisconsin Interscholastic Athletic Association Boys Golf Championships will be held Monday and Tuesday, June 6-7, at the University Ridge Golf Course in Madison, Wis. Competition will begin at 7 a.m. on both days. Practice rounds Sunday begin at 7 a.m.  Tee time assignments for Sunday practice and for Monday's play are posted on the boys golf page of the WIAA website. 

THE FORMAT:  The competition features 16 teams and 24 individual qualifiers in Division 1, and eight teams and 12 individuals in Divisions 2 and 3. Weather permitting, all competitors will play 36 holes, including 18 holes on each day. The lowest scores from the first day will have the later tee times Tuesday. 

THE FIELD:  In Division 1, the field consists of the top two teams from each of the eight sectionals. In Divisions 2 and 3, the top two teams from each of the four sectionals qualify. The top three individuals, who are not members of a qualifying team in each sectional, also qualify for the meet.

LAST YEAR:  Arrowhead was the Division 1 State champion by the slimmest of margins, shooting a four-player, 36-hole score of 623, which was one stroke better than runner-up Notre Dame. Sam Galloway of Neenah earned medalist honors with a 36-hole score of 142. Lodi won the Division 2 title with a four-player, 36-hole score of 603. Edgewood placed second with 630 strokes. Adam Miller of Lodi earned medalist honors by shooting an even-par 144. St. Mary’s Springs won the Division 3 title with a score of 667, 16 shots better than runner-up Martin Luther. Taylor Ryman of Mineral Point fired a 152 to win medalist honors.

CHAMPIONSHIP NOTES:  Madison West holds the record for the most team golf titles with 15. Osseo-Fairchild is next in line with nine, followed by Arrowhead and Racine Park with seven. Madison West has also produced the most individual champions with nine. Arrowhead is the only school to have won four straight team titles (2007-10), and there are four other schools that have won three straight championships. Osseo-Fairchild did it in 1994-96; Racine did it in 1923-25; Madison West accomplished the feat in 1934-36 and 1960-62; and Middleton did it from 1997-99. Bill Heim of Green Bay Preble and Jeremy Lyons of Glenwood City are the only individuals to win medalist honors three times. Heim won from 1986-88 and Lyons from 1997-99.

TEAMS COMPETING:  The schools qualifying for the State meet in Division 1 are Arrowhead, Badger, Bay Port, Brookfield Central, Cedarburg, DeForest, Eau Claire North, Franklin, Kaukauna, Kettle Moraine, Madison Memorial, Marquette, Middleton, Muskego, Notre Dame and Stevens Point. Teams qualifying in Division 2 are Bloomer, Catholic Memorial, Edgewood, Hayward, Lodi, Marinette, Sheboygan Falls and Xavier. Qualifying teams in Division 3 are Cochrane-Fountain City, Eleva-Strum, Iola-Scandinavia, Mondovi, St. Mary Catholic, St. Mary’s Springs, Sheboygan Lutheran and Spring Valley.

DIVISION 1 INDIVIDUAL QUALIFIERS: Last year’s champion, senior Sam Galloway of Neenah, returns to defend his title. The other individual qualifiers in Division 1 are senior Dawson Hinz of Baraboo, senior Brett Quigley of De Pere, senior Bentley Glass of Fort Atkinson, senior Isaac Prefontaine of Green Bay Preble, senior Nate Thomson of Greendale, junior Robbie Morway of Homestead, senior Ben Peterson of Kimberly, junior Derek Michalski of Marshfield, sophomore Jake Schroeckenthaler of Monona Grove, senior George Kneiser of Oconomowoc, freshman Andrew Clement of Pewaukee, senior Evan Powers of Pulaski, sophomore Dylan Brown of Reedsburg, junior Blake Skogen of River Falls, freshman Ethan Carrick of Sun Prairie, sophomore Garhett Kaegi of Verona, senior James Maney of Waterford, senior Austin Barr of Waukesha West, junior Matt Tuman of Wausau East, sophomore Adam Garski of Wauwatosa East/West, senior Devon Hanson of West Bend East, junior Zach Kramer of Westosha Central and senior Brett Muzzy of Wilmot Union.

DIVISION 2 INDIVIDUAL QUALIFIERS:  Senior Matt Bachmann of Sheboygan Falls is the top returning finisher from last year’s meet. He placed runner-up with a score of 145, one stroke off the winning score. The individual qualifiers in Division 2 are senior Sam Marks of Berlin; senior Nick Anderson of Gale-Ettrick-Trempealeau; senior Ben Alt of Columbus Catholic/Spencer; senior Andrew Otto of Kewaskum; senior Thomas Longbella of McDonell Central/Regis, who was the Division 3 champion in 2014; senior Matthew Davidson of McFarland; senior Jensen Peck of Mount Horeb; sophomore Brandon Staudt of University School; senior Austin Roth of Viroqua/North Crawford; sophomore Mason Gardner of Waupaca; senior Chris Colla of Winnebago Lutheran, who earned medalist honors in 2014; and sophomore Logan Cieslewicz of Wrightstown. 

DIVISION 3 INDIVIDUAL QUALIFIERS: Sophomore Tyler Leach of Spring Valley has the distinction of being the top returner to the meet after placing third last year with a 159, which was seven strokes off the winner’s score. The Division 3 individual qualifiers are senior Andrew Maier of Abundant Life Christian, sophomore Robert Johannes of Amherst, senior Mitchell Steiner of Argyle/Pecatonica, junior Payton Freagon of Cadott, freshman Kasey Casper of Coleman, senior Jordan Knutson of Grantsburg, senior Brett Londre of Lake Country Lutheran, junior Josh Hentrich of Lancaster, sophomore Ryan Schuelke of Manawa, sophomore Austin Schnell of Mishicot, sophomore Brian Eitel of The Prairie School and sophomore Brady Stephenson of Washburn.
