St. Mary Catholic Wins Division 3 Spring Baseball Crown

St. Mary Catholic (26-0) finishes the season as the undefeated champion in Division 3 with a 5-1 victory over Prairie du Chien in the title game Thursday afternoon at Neuroscience Group Field at Fox Cities Stadium in Grand Chute.

The Zephyrs struck first with three runs in the top of the first inning. Michael Seveska belted a double to left to score Tyler Nelson, who reached on an infield error to start the game. Starting pitcher Matt Blashka helped his cause with two-out, two-run single in the inning.

St. Mary Catholic added two unearned runs in the fifth inning. Nelson led off the inning with a single, and Christian Jack was hit by a pitch. The duo executed a double steal that directly led to two runs when the catcher’s throw to third sailed into left to score Nelson. The throw was misplayed in the outfield that allowed Jack to race home.

Nelson had four steals in the game to set a Division 3 State Tournament record for a game. He also established a Division 3 tournament record with seven stolen bases in two games.

The Blackhawks’ lone run of the game came in the sixth inning. After Casey Hogenson doubled to left field and advanced to third on a ground out, Brogan Potter drove him in with a sacrifice fly.

Nelson was the catalyst for the Zephyr offense that collected five hits, going 3-for-4 in the game with two runs scored. Blashka struck out six and yielded just one run on three hits for the complete-game victory.

Casey Hogenson and Peyton Hall doubled and Jonathan Dyer added a single to account for the Blackhawks’ three hits in the game. Hogenson was charged with the loss on the hill for the Blackhawks. He surrendered five hits and one earned run with seven strikeouts.

The Zephyrs won their first State title in their fifth appearance, and the Blackhawks finish runner-up in their four State experience.
