Champions were crowned for individuals and doubles teams in two divisions at the WIAA State Individual Tennis Tournament at Nielsen Tennis Stadium in Madison Saturday.
Emily Luetschwager of Stevens Point capped an undefeated season by winning the Division 1 singles championship with a 35-0 record. The top-seeded Luetschwager defeated the second seed Dao Sysouvanh of Sun Prairie by the match score of 6-2, 6-4. She improves on last season’s sixth-place finish and a fifth-place standing in 2013.
Kiki Risgaard of Neenah placed third, and Katya Mikhailenko of Homestead finished fourth. Alice Pascuzzi of Nicolet finished fifth, and Catherine Lindsay of Eau Claire Memorial was sixth.
Abbey Webber and Kaisey Skibba of Middleton won the Division 1 doubles championship. The duo, seeded second entering the tournament, defeated the fourth-seeded tandem of Elise Gerard and Annabelle Crowley of Nicolet, 6-1, 6-1 in the championship match. Webber and Skibba finish with a 25-1 record this season.
Top-seeded Sara Geschke and Kali Flesch of Arrowhead finished third, with the third-seeded team of Emily Pepperl and Devon Bourget of Eau Claire Memorial placing fourth. Bailey Chorney and Bobbi Stricker of Waunakee finished fifth, and Mary Zakowski and Claire Rotherham of Notre Dame was sixth.
Claire Czerwonka of Kenosha St. Joseph captured the Division 2 championship for the second consecutive year. She defeated Tallie Piaskowski of Roncalli in the championship match for the second consecutive season. Czerwonka improved to 28-1 this season with a hard fought 7-6(2), 7-6(5) victory over Piaskowski. She becomes first player in Division 2 singles play to win back-to-back titles since Caroline Starck of Big Foot/Williams Bay won three titles from 2007-2009.
Freshman Veda Sane of University School made quite an impression in her first season, finishing third, and Emma Sango of Edgewood placed fourth. Laura Larrain of Newman Catholic captured fifth place, and freshman Olivia Czerwonka of Kenosha St. Joseph, sister of the champion, placed sixth.
Riley Strauss and Caroline Taylor of University School earned the Division 2 doubles crown by defeating top-seeded Abby Fox and Maddie Molitor of Edgewood 6-1, 7-5 in the championship match. Strauss and Taylor improved their season record to 26-2.
Grace Gould and Emilie Mettraux of The Prairie School played to a third-place finish, and Megan Jacobson and Hanna Zevenbergen of Baldwin-Woodville placed fourth in their fourth time qualifying for State. Jojo Munns and Sarah Peterson of Edgewood finished fifth, and the pair of Lindsey Thomas and Emily Bauerschmidt of Kenosha St. Joseph were sixth.
The State Girls Team Tennis Tournament will be played next weekend, Friday and Saturday, Oct. 23-24, at Nielsen Tennis Stadium in Madison.
