HISTORY OF THE TOURNAMENT:  The tournament resumed in 2000 after an 18-year hiatus. The WIAA did not sponsor a championship in boys volleyball from 1983 until 1999 because of the low participation. The initial boys tournament began in 1947 with Madison West winning the first State title. Waukesha, before the school split into multiple schools, enjoyed an impressive string of success in the 1950s. It won nine championships and finished runner-up three times from 1950 through 1961. Included in that run was five straight championships from 1957-61. Kaukauna also has had a history of success, winning eight State championships, including the first tournament held in the fall. Other multiple champions are Marquette with  seven titles, and Wisconsin High School of Madison and West Allis Hale with three titles. Antigo, Catholic Memorial, Madison Central and Whitefish Bay have won two titles.

LAST YEAR: Marquette captured its seventh State title by defeating Germantown in a five-set championship match 21-25, 25-20, 23-25, 25-22, 15-12. The Hilltoppers were led by Joe Coplan with 22 kills and Will Cotter with 43 assists. Mark Heinen and Jake Dowler added 12 and 10 kills, respectively.

ABOUT THE FIELD:  Defending champion Marquette returns to the State Tournament field for the 13th straight year, which accounts for the Hilltoppers overall total. They have won seven State titles, capturing the gold in 2002, 2004, 2005, 2007, 2008, 2011 and again last year. In addition, they finished runner-up in 2010. The Hilltoppers qualify for the tournament field this season after cruising through the Greenfield Sectional without dropping a set, culminating with a 25-11, 25-10, 25-20 win over Greendale in the final. Catholic Memorial qualifies for the fifth straight season and for the 11th time overall. The Crusaders have won two titles, the first coming in 2000 and adding another in 2010. In addition, they have finished runner-up four times (2003, 2004, 2006 and 2007). They return to the State Tournament seeking their third championship after sweeping Waukesha West in the sectional final hosted at West by scores of 25-22, 25-20, 25-23. Wauwatosa East makes its ninth overall appearance and its first since 2012. The Red Raiders have captured one gold trophy, that came in 2006. They earn the opportunity to continue their quest for the State title this season by defeating Brookfield East in the Brookfield Central Sectional final 29-27, 25-19, 24-26, 25-20. Middleton returns to the tournament field for the second straight season and for the seventh time overall. The Cardinals’ furthest advance toward a title was to the semifinals in 2007 and 2008. This season, they advance to the quarterfinals by defeating Kettle Moraine 20-25, 25-15, 25-21, 25-22 in the sectional final held at Middleton. This will also be the seventh overall trip for Appleton North and its first since 2012 when the Lightning won their only State championship. Their return to State this season comes virtue of a 25-17, 25-23, 25-19 sweep over Kaukauna in the final of the Green Bay West Sectional. Burlington returns to the State Tournament field for the fifth time overall and for the first time since finishing runner-up in 2012. The Demons’ advance into the State field of eight comes following their 25-16, 25-11, 25-18 win over Kenosha Bradford in the sectional hosted by Burlington. Arrowhead returns to the tournament field for the first time since 2005 and also for the fifth time overall. The Warhawks’ most notable outcome at the State Tournament was a runner-up finish in 2001. Last week, they swept Homestead 25-17, 25-18, 25-23 in the Arrowhead Sectional final to reach the quarterfinals. New Berlin Eisenhower/West will embark on its third appearance in the State Tournament and its first since winning the State championship in 2009. The United outlasted Racine Horlick 25-16, 22-25, 24-26, 29-27, 15-8 in the sectional final hosted at Racine Park to secure their first tournament berth in five years.
