In Division 2, Whitefish Bay captured the crown with a 1-0 blanking of Cedarburg. Mount Horeb defeated Rice Lake 1-0 in the final to win the Division 3 title, and Sturgeon Bay blanked University School 2-0 to gain possession of the Division 4 gold trophy.

THE DIVISION 1 FIELD:  Two-time defending champion Marquette advances to the State semifinals in pursuit of its third consecutive championship. The Hilltoppers have now qualified for State 16 times, all coming in the last 17 years. They have won 11 of the last 16 championships, winning four consecutive crowns from 2000-03 and adding titles in 2005, 2008, 2010-12, 2014 and again last year. In addition, they finished runner-up in 2004 and in 2007. They qualify this year by edging Muskego 3-2 in the Kenosha Bradford Sectional final. The Hilltoppers are the champions of the Greater Metro Conference. Middleton returns to the tournament field for the first time since 2011 and for the 13th time overall. The most notable of the previous experiences were winning the State championship in 2004 and a runner-up finish in 2000. The Cardinals qualify as the representative from the Madison East Sectional, advancing with a 5-2 triumph over Sun Prairie in the final. They placed third in the Big Eight Conference this season. Green Bay Preble returns to the State Tournament for the ninth time overall and for the first time since 2013, when the Hornets finished runner-up. Prior to that, their furthest advance in the tournament was to the semifinals in 2001 and 2002. They blanked D.C. Everest 5-0 in the final of the Wausau West Sectional to earn their berth in the final four. The Hornets are the champions of the Fox Valley Classic Conference this fall. Brookfield Central returns to the State Tournament for the first time since 2001 and for the eighth time overall. The Lancers won the championship in 1992 after they recorded a runner-up finish in the program’s first-ever appearance in 1984. This season, they defeated Arrowhead 1-0 in the final of the Oconomowoc Sectional to advance to the State semifinals. The Lancers finished second to Marquette in the Greater Metro Conference.

DIVISION 2 FIELD:  Defending champion Whitefish Bay is making its 13th trip to the State Tournament and its third in the past four years. The Blue Dukes have now won five State titles. They won consecutive crowns in 1982 and 1983 when the tournament featured one class. They added a Division 1 title in 1994 and a Division 2 championship in 1995. The Blue Dukes also advanced to the finals in 2003 and finished runner-up. They shut out Cedarburg 4-0 in the final of the  Waukesha North Sectional to continue their pursuit of back-to-back titles. They are the champions of the North Shore Conference in 2016. Waukesha West will appear in its third State Tournament. The Wolverines’ other appearances came in Division 1 in 2002 and 2010, which resulted in losses in the quarterfinals. They advance to the tournament this year by virtue of their 4-1 win over Pewaukee in the Waukesha North Sectional final. The Wolverines finished second to Arrowhead in the Classic 8 Conference this season. Elkhorn returns to State for the second time and for the first time since 2011. The Elks fell in the quarterfinals in Division 1 in their first appearance. This season, they outlasted Oregon to advance from the Wilmot Sectional final with a 4-3 shootout following a 0-0 tie. The Elks finished runner-up to Division 3 qualifier Delavan-Darien in the Southern Lakes Conference this year. New Richmond advances to the State Tournament field for the first time following the Tigers’ 4-1 victory over Marshfield in the Wausau East Sectional final. The Tigers were crowned champions of the Middle Border Conference this season.

THE DIVISION 3 FIELD:  Defending champion Mount Horeb returns to State for the third straight season and for the sixth time in the last seven seasons, which accounts for all six of its previous appearances. The Vikings won the Division 2 championship in 2011 and were runners-up in 2012. They added a Division 3 runner-up finish in 2014. The Vikings advance to State this year via a 1-0 shutout over McFarland in the final hosted by Edgewood. They tied Sauk Prairie for the title in the North Division of the Badger Conference. Last year’s runner-up Rice Lake qualifies for State for the third straight season, which also accounts for the Warriors’ overall number of appearances. The Warriors return to the State semifinals comes after a 7-1 romp over Waupaca in the sectional final held at Rice Lake. They finished third in the Big Rivers Conference in 2016. Delavan-Darien qualifies for State for the eighth time and for the second time in the last three seasons. The Comets won the Division 3 championship in 2014 and the Division 2 title in 2000. In addition, they have four runner-up finishes on their ledger. Each of those came in Division 2 in 1994, 1996, 1998 and 2005. They ousted Catholic Memorial 4-1 in the East Troy Sectional final to advance to the State semifinals. The Comets are the champions of the Southern Lakes Conference. Seymour will experience the State Tournament for the first time, advancing to the semifinals via a 4-3 shootout following a 2-2 tie with Fox Valley Lutheran. They placed runner-up to Menasha in the standings of the Bay Conference during the regular season.

THE DIVISION 4 FIELD:  Racine St. Catherine’s advances to the semifinals for the second year in a row and for the fifth time overall. The Angels won the Division 3 championship in 2009 and finished runner-up in Division 2 in 2001. They earned their return to the field by defeating The Prairie School 2-1 in the sectional final played at The Prairie School. The Angels tied for second in the Metro Classic Conference standings this year. Winnebago Lutheran qualifies for the State Tournament for the fifth time overall and for the first time since 2012. Each of the Vikings’ previous appearances came in Division 3. They had back-to-back runner-up finishes in 2011 and 2012 to add to the second-place finish they had in 2005. The Vikings edged St. Lawrence Seminary 1-0 in overtime in the Lomira Sectional final to return to the State Tournament field. They tied St. Lawrence Seminary for the Wisconsin Flyway Conference title this season.  Sheboygan Christian/Sheboygan Lutheran qualifies for State for the first time in the co-op’s history. The co-op’s advance to the State semifinals resulted from a 4-3 shootout after tying University School 0-0 in the sectional final hosted at Sheboygan Lutheran. It was runner-up to Oostburg in the Big East Conference standings this year. Prior to the formation of the co-op arrangement, Sheboygan Christian was a three-time qualifier, all coming successively in Division 3 from 2001-03. The string of appearances produced back-to-back titles in 2002 and 2003. Phillips is a first-time qualifier to the State Tournament. The Loggers’ earned the berth by slipping past Arcadia 1-0 in the final of the Cumberland Sectional. They are the champions of the Northern Lights Conference this fall.
