Essay

Many people have said to me, over the course of my life, that high school was the best time of their lives. An equal number of people have told me that those very years are the worst in their lives, and that everything gets better after high school. After going through high school myself I can only conclude that what made the difference for me was participating in athletics. Being a member of both the Cross Country and Track and Field teams has not only made my high school a positive experience but has actively shaped me into who I am today. The Cross Country and Track programs were very successful while I was competing, and being part of such a great team allowed me to see all the hard work the varsity athletes put into the sport and the drive the JV team had to work just as hard as those above them. This culture of hard work and effort not only made me a successful athlete but also showed me how to act in life. I learned to work hard for what I wanted and never give up until the end, no matter how difficult. My time as a role model for younger athlete and forced me to become what they could see in me, and so I owe my own character to those around me during my time in sports. I will continue to act as I have practiced throughout college and the rest of my life.

Athletic participation has been one of the most profound and beneficial experiences of my high school career and has taught me many valuable lessons. During my sophomore and junior years, I was not the best runner on our Cross Country team, but my role as a top five runner was pivotal in my team's journey to state. I learned that every member of the team is important as we worked toward a common goal. Another notable experience from Cross Country is the friendships that were formed and strengthened. My closest friends are my teammates. These relationships were forged buy working through difficult conditions and physical stress and also by sharing fun and exciting moments together. One last way that Cross Country has helped me is through developing a good work ethic and perseverance. Cross Country is a difficult sport and those who are successful normally achieve that success through hard work and perseverance. My high school career was marked by countless hours of training in all weather conditions and fighting against mental and physical challenges. This perseverance through difficulty was rewarded by multiple state appearances. I am grateful for the experiences and lessons learned during my high school athletic participation and I am confident that these lessons regarding teamwork, relationship building and strengthening, and persevering through difficulty will serve me in all my future endeavors.

Essay

Athletic participation has immensely contributed to my development as an individual and as a leader. Because of the constant encouragement of coaches, parents and my teammates combined with my own determination, I have relentlessly poured my heart into the sports I chose to pursue in high school. This mentality of striving for success has undoubtly carried over to my school work, jobs and just about every other aspect of my life. As an individual, I have become well aware of my talents and strengths, as well as my areas in need of improvement and this self-awareness has made me a more well rounded person. High school athletics has done more than enough in prepping me for the future. While being a three season athlete every year, I have overcome adversities such as injuries and illnesses, challenging class loads and the demands of multiple jobs to always add value to my team. As a team captain in each sport, I have learned to communicate and motivate my teammates as well as celebrate their personal and athletic accomplishments. Due to the skills learned on the court and at practice in high school, I will know how to be an effective leader working with peers in my future career and beyond.

Essay

Participating in athletics has taught me how to work hard, be disciplined, utilize teamwork and overcome adversity. For example, I was always at practice everyday, on time, and ready to go. Wrestling in particular, is a sport that required extra discipline by having to follow a specific meal plan throughout each season to maintain my weight. Football also taught me how to work with others and that one person cannot be successful without everyone striving toward the same goal. During my last game of high school football I was sidelined by an achilles injury and watched as the minutes slipped away and we lost the game. That injury carried over through wrestling and I missed a quarter of the season. This taught me to push through tough times and not give into adversity. But, the life lesson that impacted me the most, is learning to work hard. I learned the harder I work, the more successful I will be. During my athletic career I have outworked the competition with extra lifting, extra practice and seeking the help of more advanced athletes. I have always applied the same principle to the classroom. When exhausted after a long practice, I would come home and work extra hard on my school work. In my athletic career I have won many medals, trophies, and championships, but I have also gained so much more. I have learned that working hard, being disciplined, and persevering through tough times will help me in all aspects of life.

Athletic participation has been a major factor in my development as an individual. Running has indubitably changed my life for the better by teaching me both how to push myself and how to get along with others. Just a few of the skills that have transferred from athletics to the rest of my life include improved concentration, formidable persistence, healthy camaraderie, sturdy confidence, gratitude in success, humility in defeat, and an overall sense of constant well-being. I know that athletics will continue to play a role in my future success. The well-being of an individual is a mix of physical, emotional, mental, and spiritual states of well-being. However, increased well-being in any one of these areas will help the others to improve. Athletics promote physical and mental well-being, but will help me emotionally and spiritually as well. I know that as long as I am well in all of these areas I will have success in any career I decide to pursue.

High School participation has helped me immensely. It has taught me many important life lessons and character traits that have made me become a better person. Hard work, resilience, leadership, working with others, are all things I have learned from playing sports. The traits I have acquired from sports translate directly to the classroom. School is just like a sport, as it takes hard work, dedication and resilience to succeed, and because of this I have been able to excel in the classroom. The competitive drive that propels me in sports also propels me to become successful in life. Without any more competitions left to quench my competitive drive, the want to succeed in the world of business takes its place. There is no better correlation to sports than the world of business. To excel in the world of business, one needs to be hardworking, be able to work with others and can lead and adapt to the ever changing situations. Success in life is the ultimate goal as participating in sports is just practice to hone your capabilities and to gain confidence in yourself. I know exactly what I am capable of and what I can achieve if I put my mind to it. Playing sports has given me this confidence in myself and confidence is a huge key to success.

Essay

My athletic participation has contributed very strongly to my development. After all the years that I have been playing sports, I honestly believe that they have made me the person I am today. They’ve enhanced my social skills with others, they’ve made me set and reach goals that I never thought I could have achieved, and they have prepared me for my future life after high school. I hope to take these lessons and morals that I have learned and put them to use in the near future. I have one more year left of my high school career and I plan on sticking to the goals that I still have yet to achieve. If I work hard to reach these goals, there isn’t anything that can stop me from being successful and achieving them.

Athletics have taught me many life lessons throughout the years, such as integrity, leadership, and perseverance. My involvement in sports have contributed to my development and growth immensely, helping me become a much more rounded person. Athletics helped my growth as a competitor, transforming me from a young kid merely out to participate to a competitor with the desire to succeed for my team. Athletics taught me to take a stand in the middle of a challenge, helping me become a leader and assist my teammates so we could all achieve our ultimate goal.  Through many years of excruciating practices, the sports I competed in have taught me perseverance. Between cross country, wrestling, and track, I had to persevere to earn that extra point or beat that guy in front of me. Finally, one of the final aspects is my growth as a person. Often times, I would be chosen to lead the team in a run where the coach wasn't watching, which helped me gain integrity and do the right thing. To me, these skills truly entail what I wish to continue to be as a college student. For example, I feel that hard work and integrity will come into play in next year’s classes, where I now feel competent that I will make the right choices. As an aspiring teacher, I hope to bring to the college classrooms and my own classrooms these skills, while also teaching my students these skills that I am extremely grateful to possess.

Essay

My years as a student athlete have taught me lessons that I revere at a higher level than any information I have encountered while in a classroom. I have learned from sports the true value of determination, cooperation, and selflessness, and these characteristics play quite a significant role in my life. My day-to-day life has consisted of fairly selfless and determined behavior, and I have always gotten along well with others. Athletics, however, have honed and refined these characteristics; they have molded me into a much more scrupulous person. I have realized that nothing great in life can be accomplished without effective teamwork and determination. For the past three years, I was a member of our Cross Country team as we won the State Meet. I have never worked harder for anything in my life; looking back on it, every drop of sweat, every mile I ran was worth it. These feats were the result of immense self-discipline and cooperation by our team, and our efforts were rather fruitful. We ran for each other, not ourselves. I credit the appreciation I hold for my abilities and opportunities to one of my best friends. Watching her struggle through injuries and her determination to move forward made me realize that I must cherish and make the most of what I have while I can. I am incredibly thankful for my high school experiences. I will continue to put others before myself, and to be determined to succeed in all my future endeavors.

Athletic participation has truly taught me a lot about myself and life in general. Being on a variety of different teams, ranging from an undefeated basketball team this year to a zero win season in baseball my freshman year. This has given me both perspectives of a successful team and an unsuccessful team, and helped me to never take for granted the value of success. Throughout high school, athletics have really defined my character. I've learned the fine line between failure and success, and how one small thing in a situation can completely change the outcome. I've learned to give everything all of your effort, as you only have so long to do something, so you might as well get as good at it as you can. The most important thing I have learned though was, success absolutely does not come easy. It takes hard work and dedication to become good at something, but if you honestly care about it enough, the hard work becomes a lot more enjoyable knowing that there is something on the other side once you accomplish your goal. In the future, I will continue to pursue sports and weight lifting, as those are some of my favorite activities. I love being active and working out, and I acquired these interests through high school athletics. Because of athletics, I am and will be, a healthier, smarter and better person in general throughout the rest of my life.

Essay

Sports have been extremely influential all throughout my life; from backyard games with the neighborhood, to state competitions, there have been numerous lessons that I have learned and that have helped develop me into who I am today. Mental toughness -- if there is one thing that I have learned from running up a steep hill, two miles into a race, on an eighty degree day, it is to stay mentally tough and not back down from adversity. No matter how challenging the situation I am faced with is, I feel that participating in athletics has given me the determination and ability to overcome it. A hard work ethic has been ingrained in me from the countless hours of grueling and demanding practices. Though I know that one day I will no longer play in a sport, I am confident that the numerous, invaluable lessons that they have taught me will stick with me for the rest of my life. In college, in my future job, and eventually in setting an example for my own children, I will utilize the same values that I have learned in sports to ensure that I do everything to the best of my ability. The final, and in my personal opinion the most important, value that I have learned in sports that has made an impact in my life is humility. I try to stay humble everyday, and believe that this characteristic will single handedly make the biggest impact on my life.

Athletics has not only impacted my life but it has been my life for the last twelve years. I am twice the overall person I am because of my involvement in sports and twice as prepared for life after education. Every aspect of my life from academics to social life has revolved around my participation in athletics. For the rest of my life I will be able to use the skills I have acquired through my time playing sports and being on teams. I learned how to respect authority figures and future co-workers. Hard-work and dedication are instilled in my personality, along with understanding how to handle adversity because of all my time involved with athletics. The most important attribute I've learned in athletics is how to be passionate in everything I do, following Emerson's quote, "Nothing great has ever been achieved without enthusiasm."

Regardless of what some people might think, athletics impacts an individual's life more than any other extra-curricular activity. Playing sports has created a lifestyle for me that I wouldn't change for the world, because I enjoy it so much. I first got involved in athletics because of my parents. They both played sports in high school and my dad continued in college. They influenced me to participate in football, basketball, baseball, and track, of which I ended up winning state titles in two. The fact that I participated in these sports enabled me to become many things, which I never would have been without athletics. It taught me responsibility, teamwork, and persistence. Above all playing sports has helped me learn from my mistakes and become a better athlete and person on and off of the court/field/track. If it weren't for being so involved in athletics, I might not be as responsible as I am today. I always had to make sure I had my priorities straight, and dedicated my time to my goals in life. One of my main goals, dating back to eighth grade, was to earn a track and field scholarship. When my shaking hand signed on the dotted line for a pole vault scholarship to Illinois State, I knew that this was one of my defining moments. There were many sacrifices I had to make in order to receive this offer, but in the end it was evident that it was time well spent.

When I began my athletic career I was just a boy, looking to let out extra energy all kids possess. Little did I know the impact athletics would have on my life. As the years progressed I learned what being an athlete meant, I had to hold myself to a higher standard than others. I made it a point of emphasis to treat all of my coaches with the respect they deserved and be a distinguished student in the classroom. Through this time I have gotten a persona that is both respected and successful. People look at me as a role model, I am not allowed to say and do whatever I want, I have to present myself as a virtuous citizen and I love it. My future holds endless possibilities and everyone of them is obtainable. Hard work competitiveness are the two largest aspects of athletics I will use the rest of my life. I am focusing the next chapter of my life on becoming a doctor and I don’t know of any other field that is more competitive to get in. They only take the best of the best and nothing less and my entire life I’ve striven to be the best I can be. There is nothing that has prepared me for the work and determination it will take more than athletics have. Sports are games and are suppose to be enjoyed, life is the big game and I will enjoy every second.

Sports have definitely impacted my life more than any of the other activities that I have been involved with. I have had the opportunity to be a four sport athlete during my High School Career. Football is my favorite sports and I plan on playing it at UW-River Falls. In the winter, I wrestle for the Spring Valley-Elmwood wrestling team. I have been a part of some successful wrestling teams that have conference, regional, and sectional and state titles. My involvement in these four sports has helped me to learn time management skills. I have also learned that in order to be successful you have to put in the time and the effort. Hard work allowed me to be successful. For example, this past summer I spent a lot of time in the weight room and it helped me in my athletics but helped me to become more confident in other areas. I have learned how to work effectively and efficiently which will help me in my future career. Also the idea that hard work and dedication will help you succeed.

Essay

Athletic participation has taught me many things in life. One of the main things that it has taught me is how to become a good leader. During my high school football career I played the Quarterback position on offense and the Safety position on defense. Being a QB and Safety you need to know just about every detail of every play and because of this if someone did not know what they needed to do I was the person they asked. Learning how to become a leader from athletics will help me excel in the jobs I want to pursue later on in life. Another thing athletic participation has taught me is how to react in pressure situations. Many sports involve situations where an athlete needs to make up their mind very fast. In the work force there will be times when a person needs to use the skill of fast decision making that they may have learned while participating in athletics. Athletic participation has also contributed to my development because it has taught me discipline. Being a student athlete means you have to show up on time to school or practice every day, which is very important when it comes to having a job. Athletics can help develop and improve many skills a person will use in their future.
