Essay

Athletics has always been a part of my life ever since I was able to walk. My family has had a large influence on my life with my involvement with athletics. As a child I became devoted to succeeding in sports, as well as in the classroom. Being around sports as a child has really contributed to my development not only as an athlete but also as a student and a person. I have been taught perseverance, determination, compassion and leadership through my participation in athletics. Being successful on the field and mat has driven me to also be successful in the classroom. Due to my work ethic in athletics and in the classroom, I have been given the privilege to wrestle at Purdue University. Wrestling at Purdue University will greatly mold the person I am and directly contribute to my future as a student and a person. After completing my wrestling career at Purdue University I will still continue to surround myself by athletics because I have seen how they can benefit me as a person, and how they can teach me an infinite amount of lessons. Athletics has been a large factor in the foundation of who I am as a person. I am beyond thankful for all the experiences and lessons athletics has provided me with. I am looking forward to my career and the role that athletics will play in my future.

Essay

Athletic participation has had a profound impact on my development not only in a physical sense, but also in the establishment of important core values. I still retain a sense of nostalgia when I think back to my first pre-season soccer meeting. At this meeting my future coach, Mr. David Kite, stated, “In this program we strive to develop competitive soccer players, but above all, we hope to develop better men.” After four years in Mr. Kite’s program, I can confirm that his intentions of promoting multi-faceted growth were accomplished. I learned to take responsibility and to be accountable for my actions through off-season training programs, to have a strong sense of integrity on and off of the field, to maintain humility no matter the outcome of a game, and to be a leader. I have been able to adapt these skills and values to my other scholastic endeavors as well. Whether in band, in the classroom, or at a Student Council meeting, I am able to use what I have learned through sports to contribute positively to the group, foster teamwork, and to perform consistently at a high level. The experiences and knowledge that I have amassed from my coaches and teammates, and from practices and games, have shaped my personal growth and helped me to accomplish things across many disciplines. In the future, I expect to maintain and augment these traits by continuing to pursue college athletics and further reach my academic, athletic and personal potential.

Essay

Athletic participation has contributed greatly to my social and physical development during my high school experience. Success on and off the field is a direct result of hard work and extra effort. When I began my athletic career, I realized that in order to be the best, I would have to work the hardest. Athletic participation has engrained the value of a solid work ethic and dedication. With all the time spent in the gym working on my game, I have also had to budget my time well with my studies. This time management skill not only helped me succeed in high school, but will be a critical success factor in my success as a collegiate athlete. As a result of playing team sports for many years, I understand the value of a teammate and understanding the meaning of “the whole is greater than the sum of its parts”. A teammate is a brother and a best friend all in one. Across all of my sports, I have experienced many different brothers and many different personalities. We all shared a common bond and a common goal. It allowed us to see past any differences and rally for the team. The success we enjoyed was as a result of great teamwork and mutual growth. Being a student athlete at Germantown High School has had an amazing impact on who I am today. Through sports and studying, I feel very fortunate and very prepared for the college challenges ahead.

Essay

Athletic participation has contributed significantly to my development in ways that will shape my future. First, it has developed my communication skills. In order to be successful in the work force when I’m older, I know that I am going to need to be a good communicator. Communicating with coaches and teammates to accomplish a common goal, whether it’s winning or strategizing past obstacles, is something that I can use as an asset in my life and in any future endeavors I encounter. Second, athletics have improved my ability to focus. It’s especially tough to be focused and engaged in every moment throughout practices and games for at least three hours a day and six days a week. Over the years, I’ve gotten exceptionally better at focusing on the task at hand, and I’ve realized this is a key part to overall and team success. I believe this will also lead to success in the workplace. Last, I’ve learned time management through my participation in athletics. Having to balance playing a sport all year and taking seven classes all at the same time can be difficult to manage. However, through many years of practice, I’ve learned the best ways to organize my time to be successful in everything I do. The organizational skills that I’ve learned through balancing sports and school at the same time is something that I will take with me to enhance my ability to be successful. My sports participation bettered my future and me.

Essay

Each and every day I see the impact that athletic participation has had on my life. I have learned many lessons and values in sports that will stick with me forever; however, a few of the traits I learned on the field – hard work, preparation, and confidence – have made the biggest difference in the person I am today. When I work hard, I begin to feel prepared. When I feel prepared, I believe in what I want to accomplish. Coming into high school, I thought I knew what hard work, preparation, and confidence were – I was wrong. Fortunately for me, I have had a few coaches who taught me everything they know. From my freshman year to my senior year, coaches have pushed me beyond my limits. I began to learn how my mind will almost always quit before my body does. Keeping that in the back of my mind, I believe future obstacles will be easier to overcome. Whether it may be going through college finals, or applying for my dream job, I know I will be more confident because of what I learned in high school athletics.

Playing sports has been an integral part of my life since I was a child. There are multiple lessons in sports that simply cannot be taught in any textbook or course in school. Sports have added significantly to my development and without them, I believe I would be an entirely different person. Being a member of a team has taught me the important lessons of dealing with adversity and being selfless. During any given competition in sports, some aspects of the game will not go in your favor. Sports have taught me that things will inevitably go bad, but what truly matters is how one reacts to that situation. Selflessness is taught with being a member of a team. As a member of a team, one must give up personal achievements for the much more important team success. Putting others first and overcoming adversity are two of the many lessons that sports have taught me. Having played sports, I feel as though I will be better prepared for the future. Teamwork is not only vital in sports--it happens all the time in the “real world”. Working with people and dealing with challenges are also real-life scenarios, which also occur in sports. Sports teach lessons valuable to any time or aspect of life. I’m hoping to use the experiences in sports and athletics to aid me in my future path in life.

Athletic participation has contributed to my development more than words can possibly describe. It is hard to say how it has contributed to my development because athletic participation has been the focal point of my entire life. I do, however, believe that my involvement in athletics has made my growth as a student larger than one who does not partake in athletics. I have stressed the importance of academics throughout my life. Naturally, athletic involvement has improved my success in academics. It is statistically proven that students involved in athletics advance more in the classroom than students who are not involved. Academic success is one responsibility that comes with being a student-athlete. Athletic participation has lead to my successful development in academics. My character has also developed positively. Being a student-athlete has lead to my overall triumphs as a person because being involved in athletics I have not only developed, but also demonstrated my good sportsmanship and leadership. I have developed skills that are difficult to acquire outside of athletics. It is my belief that my developments obtained from athletic participation will continue to grow in the future. I will take what I have already developed, and I will expand my accomplishments to the college level of athletics. Furthermore, my involvement in athletics will continue to accompany me throughout my lifetime. Athletic participation has opened up a whole new world of endless possibilities that I will carry with me for the remainder of my life.

Essay

Athletics are not only beneficial to the body, but also to the mind. Sports teach life lessons that you may not otherwise learn. The most important lesson I learned through athletics is how to compete. With competition, sports taught me teamwork and how to be a leader and was instrumental in my development as a person and athlete, aiding my success in the future. Aristotle said, “The whole is greater than the sum of its parts.” This is something everyone must realize in life. No individual is above another; the individual will never be able to reach the heights of a unit, so a good teammate cares about the team’s success over individual success. I didn’t care about personal notoriety; I cared that my team could trust me. Leadership is something one must embrace. You represent your team and community; you carry everyone’s reputation that follows you. Leading isn’t a sometime responsibility. It’s a full-time job, and I embraced the challenge of teaching younger players to be leaders so we are successful long after I am gone. The biggest lesson I learned through athletics was how to compete. Competition is what drives our world and makes some people more successful than others. Those who compete will always out achieve those who do not, and I have learned to compete in everyday life, not just in athletics. Teamwork, leadership, and embracing competition are lessons I’ve been fortunate to learn through sports that I may otherwise not have learned.

High school sports have taught me important lessons that have allowed me to be successful not only in sports, but also in life. My involvement in cross-country has reinforced these lessons. Each year, our team made it to state, and each year I learned something new. My freshman year taught me about humility. We were ranked first in the state and I was hoping to win the individual title, but none of us ran well and we finished a disappointing fifth place. I learned about perseverance my sophomore year. We worked hard all season long and were determined not to repeat last year’s let down. We ran with a sense of purpose and took home the team title and I was the individual champion. As a junior, I learned about pride and expectations. Even though we lost four of our top five runners, we rallied our guys to repeat as a team and individual champions. My senior year taught me about believing. We graduated five of our top seven runners from the previous year, and our team was made up of young, inexperienced guys. However, we believed we could win and did everything in our power to make it happen. Once again, we were able to win the team and individual championship. The lessons that I learned in high school have become a part of me. Humility, pride, perseverance, and a belief in myself are all qualities that will continue to enable me to become successful in life.

Essay

Athletic participation has contributed to my development in more than just the athletic area of my life. The values I have learned in my time of athletic participation such as hard work and never being satisfied with any accomplishments have also transferred to my time with academics. I rank number one in my class but it is not because I am the smartest student. I have achieved a 4.0 GPA that can be mainly attributed to my work ethic. At a young age, sports helped me to learn that in order to achieve success, you must work harder than the person you are attempting to beat. There is no one to beat in academics, but in order to get good grades, I realized that I had to not only pay attention and be active in classes, but I also had to dedicate time to studying out of school even if it would be easier and more fun to do something I enjoy. Never being satisfied with any accomplishments has also helped to motivate me and help me to never give up. I think these values I have taken from athletics will impact my future by continuing to be an important part of who I am.

Athletic participation has contributed to my development as a student-athlete because it has taught me several things over the years. First, it has taught me to manage my time wisely and get things done when I have the chance, not waiting until the last minute. This is a skill that I had to learn early on in my high school career as I participated and continue to participate in sports year round. Sports have also taught me to play within a team and that when you are in a team, you do the good for the team, not necessarily what is good for yourself. Being a captain has also allowed me to add in what I think would make my team most successful. Being a leader does not always mean you have to lead, sometimes you have to take a step back and see the situation from the other players' point of view first before you can decide what is best for the team. These skills of time management, teamwork and leadership will help me in my future as I plan to participate in sports in college and continue to succeed in academics.

Essay

By participating in athletics I’ve learned many valuable life qualities. Each of these qualities has molded me into the young adult I am today. As every athlete knows, to excel in any sport requires a lot of patience, dedication, and hard work. However, these are also the keys to success in life. In life you have to have patience. I have learned through sports that I need to give things time in order to see a change. I knew that I wasn’t going to wake up one day and be an all-star wrestler. I knew that it was going to take a lot of time, but in the end, it was going to be worth it. Sports have also taught me how to stay committed to something. I’ve learned that not everything is easy and that most things need to be worked on. This isn’t just true for sports, but in other areas like academics, careers, and future goals. The last key to life and probably the most important is working hard. By working hard, I’ve been able to obtain many of my goals and have had a lot of success; not only in sports, but in everything I do. Sports have made me into who I am. A person that is willing to wait for his time to seize an opportunity, someone who is going to keep trying until he has reached his goals, and a person who is willing to work hard to get what he wants.

Essay

People are molded throughout their lives by parents, teachers, and other authority figures from the time they are born until they leave for college. One of the biggest factors in my development was participating in my high school's athletic programs. It has affected my eating and sleeping habits, exercise routine, college decision, work ethic, and my overall philosophy on life. Athletics have taught me that what you get out of something stems from what you put into it, and sometimes you have to sacrifice in order to succeed. I learned that in order to reach my goals in life I needed to work as hard as I can to succeed. I could be trying to run a new personal record in the mile, or get an 'A' in AP English; no matter what the goal is, I need to give my best effort so that I can be satisfied with the outcome, knowing I am the best that I can be. Participating in athletics has taught me many things that I will carry with me throughout the rest of my life. It has made me realize that working hard in sports and school to meet my goals is just the beginning; this philosophy needs to be applied to everything I do in life. This includes my future schooling and career.

Essay

Being involved in athletics has been a huge part of my life. Athletics have taught me many life lessons that will be essential to my success in the future. In every sport I have been a part of, I have learned the value of teamwork, leadership, competitiveness, perseverance, determination, and a good work ethic. These lessons have truly shaped me into the person I am today. Having been a captain in every sport in which I have participated, I have experienced the responsibility that a leader accepts, and have seen the impact that a good leader has on the outcome of an event. Through sports, I have been able to grow and mature into a young man with high standards, and have had the opportunity to develop many life skills that I will be able to use later in life. From athletics, I will be able to take the skills of effective communication, listening, motivating others, initiative and goal setting, and the lessons of handling success and failure gracefully, never giving up, and true appreciation for opportunities presented to me. I am confident that these traits and the life lessons my coaches have taught will help me be a positive leader and a successful and contributing member of society. A person who has good leadership skills, a great work ethic, and a competitive spirit will have a good chance of being an important part in any organization.

Essay

Desire, dedication, and discipline all play an important role in the development of an athlete. Being a three-sport athlete, I have learned sportsmanship, leadership, and perseverance. Having a desire means having a will to be the best I can be. It requires a relentless passion for sports, but also paves a trail for life lessons. It takes a strong work ethic to push myself beyond my limits and integrity to do my very best for my team and myself. Dedication includes the commitment to excellence through sacrifice and taking action. It is taking responsibility without excuses and persevering when the going gets tough. I have taken on a leadership role where my teammates look to me for direction, guidance, and inspiration. Discipline is a measure of focused attention and effort. I am determined to overcome roadblocks and obstacles because I understand the bigger picture. For example, championships and prestigious awards are not guaranteed, but the values that come from the hard work help define great champions in life. Not only do I accept discipline, I embrace it for the benefit of the team. Sports have taught me how to be humble in victory and gracious in defeat. I know that the lessons learned through athletics will carry on into life. I will continue to excel in academics through hard work and commitment, while using other traits learned through athletics in every day life opportunities.

Essay

Extracurricular activities have played a huge role in my life. I have been involved in three sports all through high school, along with joining S.A.D.D. (Students Against Destructive Decisions), NHS (National Honor Society), Student Government, and volunteering at various local events. Being involved in extracurricular provides me with two options; to just put in minimal effort in classes or work that much harder. Unfortunately, many of students go with the first option, which can sometimes give athletes a bad name. I, however, back in middle school, decided that I was going to make the A-honor roll every quarter along with being the best I could be in every extracurricular activity that I was in. Another unfortunate fact about kids in school these days is that there are many who have bad situations at home. Extracurriculars gave me the escape from reality that I needed during my early years of middle/high school while my parents were going through a messy divorce. Overall, athletic participation has been a huge reason for my success, if not the main reason. It has made me realize that nothing is given, it is earned. Realizing and accepting this belief will more than help me in the future when it comes to college, the National Guards, or any other obstacle that I face.
