Board of Control Conducts September Meeting

STEVENS POINT, Wis. – The Wisconsin Interscholastic Athletic Association Board of Control acted on a number of items, including the renewing of the basketball and softball agreements, and reviewed several membership-related topics at its September meeting today.

The Board approved an agreement with Spalding designating the TF1000 Legacy as the “Official Basketball of the WIAA” through the 2025 State Tournament Series, beginning in 2021. In addition, the Dudley SB12 (4H-311Y) will continue as the “Official Softball of the WIAA” beginning in 2021 and running through the 2025 State Tournament.

The Board also supported an executive staff plan to recognize the commitment and longevity of WIAA-licensed officials.  Officials having been licensed 30 years receive a crystal paperweight, a bronze pin commemorating 40 years of service, a silver pin for 50 years and a gold whistle for sixty years as a licensed official.

The executive staff presented the Board with reports on the Area Meetings in Appleton, Greenfield and Mauston, which are the first three of seven Area Meetings around the state this fall. In addition, the Board was provided the first draft of the 2019-20 operations budget.

Other topics presented in the executive staff reports to the Board were the ongoing social media, marketing and office technology efforts, as well as awareness of the 2021 ACT testing dates and an update on the efforts to identify support for assault on officials legislation. The Board also received liaison reports from John Ashley of the Wisconsin Association of School Boards, Andy Engel of the Hamilton Consulting Group and Todd Sobrilsky of the Wisconsin Athletic Directors Association, and Pam Foegen of the NFHS Board of Directors.

The membership of the WIAA oversees interscholastic athletic programs for 511 senior high schools and 50 junior high/middle level schools in its membership. It sponsors 27 championship tournament series for boys and girls in 2019-20. For more information, please contact the WIAA office at (715) 344-8580.
