Penalty Assessment

Q: Team A, 3rd down and 3, short pass to the left, receive gain 10 yards, however, a hold allowed him to gain an additional five yards. He did attain the first down on "clean hands" and I set the sticks at the point of the foul and then marked off ten yards which made it first and twenty. Was I correct, or should the play have come back to the to the line of scrimmage and then marked off ten yards? I have never had this situation come up before, so that is why I am asking you for your advice. The other officials were both rookies and did not know the answer.
A: Penalty is enforced from the spot of the foul. At that point, if we’ve reached the line to gain, first and 10. It appears that the situation would have ended up where he started from, third and three.
