Baserunner Gives Up

Q: R1 is on third base with one out. B2 strikes out and R1, believing the strike out to be the third out, leaves third base and heads for the first base dugout, crossing the field but not the first base foul line before realizing his mistake and heading back to third. At what point is R1 out?
A: The runner abandoned his efforts to run the bases, therefore he is called out at the time he has clearly left the baseline. Rule 8-4-2-p-note
