As we approach the end of the semester and grading periods here are a few of the common question that arise about athletes serving penalties during the WIAA tournament series:

There are three types of potential rule violations:  NFHS Playing Rules & WIAA Season Regulations, Academic requirements, and Code of Conduct compliance.

  1. If an athlete is ineligible for violating your Code of Conduct, the athlete is ineligible for the entire tournament series.  (WIAA Handbook, Article VII, Section 3 – Code of Conduct – page 36).
  2. If an athlete is ineligible because he/she was ejected during a contest, it is the result of an NFHS rule and Season Regulation and he/she may return to the tournament once the ejection penalty is served.
  3. If an athlete is academically ineligible and your code of conduct allows return, the athlete may return on the 16th scheduled school day if two or more F’s (WIAA Handbook, Article V, Section 2, Paragraph A-1 – page 33) or when your code of conduct is more stringent than the WIAA minimum two failing grades such as one failing grade at your school.

Keep in mind that athletes who are ineligible during the WIAA tournament series (for any reason) may not appear in uniform, participate in warm-ups, and may not participate in the awards ceremony at the WIAA tournament (WIAA Handbook, Article VII, Section 3, Paragraph E - page 39).

Always apply your code as written.  Apply your code immediately when you believe it has been violated.  Provide due process which consists of explaining the rule and violation to the student athlete along with the penalty.  If the student appeals, they are ineligible during the appeals process.
