WIAA Board Hears Staff & Liaison Reports

The Wisconsin Interscholastic Athletic Association Board of Control received information on numerous association-related issues in reports conducted by the Executive Staff at its September meeting today.

Other reports presented were by liaisons to the WIAA Board, including John Ashley, Executive Director of the Wisconsin Association of School Boards; Michael Thompson, the Deputy State Superintendent with the Department of Public Instruction; and Reedsburg Athletic Director Bryan Yager,  representative of the Wisconsin Athletic Directors Association.

The Board approved two action items on the agenda. The appointments to the 2012-13 baseball and softball coaches advisory committees, as well as the editorial changes in the 2012-13 Media Policies Reference Guide were supported by unanimous votes.         

The Executive Staff and the Board reviewed the reaction and impressions from the Barneveld Area Meeting, the first of seven Area Meetings around the state this fall. The overview included discussions on what it means to be a member of the association from a leadership and loyalty perspective, possible Constitutional amendments, supplement awareness and a demonstration of the new WIAA website. The Executive Staff and Board is interested in membership feedback from all Area Meetings regarding the membership’s amateur status rules on acceptable awards and processing violations.

Among the topics discussed at the meeting include the routine preliminary development of the 2012-13 operational budget scheduled to be formally voted on in October and the progress of the 100th anniversary of the State Cross Country Meet preparations. The 100th State Meet is scheduled for Saturday, Oct. 27 at The Ridges Golf Course in Wisconsin Rapids.

The Board was informed of the decisions made by two schools to discontinue their 2012 varsity football season. The staff presented and clarified the impact of the decisions on qualification for the football playoffs. Conference opponents of schools discontinuing their seasons will receive a conference forfeit on that scheduled date. Remaining non-conference opponents on the schedule will not receive a forfeit win, and those opponents are encouraged to fill the void in the schedule with another opponent if possible.

    The WIAA oversees interscholastic athletic programs for 507 senior high schools and 64 junior high/middle level schools in its membership. It sponsors 25 championship tournament series.
